Crew leader will lead seasonal crew of Restoration Technicians in prairie management and restoration activities at Nachusa Grasslands, a 4,000 acre preserve near Dixon, IL.
Crew leader will work with Project Director and Restoration Ecologist coordinating and leading seasonal crew to remove invasive species and hand-collect native seeds. Other tasks include fence removal and fence building along with maintaining and cleaning buildings, setting up for visitor and member events, running errands, and repairing equipment. Compensation includes on-site housing (one technician per room). No pets permitted. High speed internet available at headquarters.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Leads seasonal crew.
- May interact with visitors.
- Works and interacts with volunteer stewards.
- Will receive work orders, but will function in the field without direct supervision.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolation, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, herbicide sprayer, etc).
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).
- Work experience at Nachusa Grasslands
- Course work in ecology or experience with natural areas restoration.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
This is a full-time- short-term position starting on March 6 and concluding on November 17, 2017.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
Salary: $12.50 / hour
